GTA 5 Random Events are encounters and short missions that appear at random across San Andreas, usually letting you help or hurt a bystander. The game has 57 of them, or 60 in the enhanced version, and finishing any 14 counts toward 100% completion.

How random events behave
Many events repeat, including robberies, cop chases, shootouts and muggings. Others appear only once, like the events that lead to named characters such as the Hitchers, or the Altruist Cult shootout. A few types cannot be done more than once per in-game week, such as Security Vans, Border Patrols and Abandoned Vehicles. After finishing one of those you wait 6-7 in-game days to meet that type again.
Attacking someone turns the dot red, while helping them turns it light blue. Check the colour on the GTA 5 map before you approach.
Examples by type
Abandoned Vehicles
On Smoke Tree Road in Grand Senora Desert, a lone Surfer idles near the airfield. A man stuns you, and you wake in your underwear on a railway line with a train coming. As Trevor you can use your special ability and shoot him first. At the RON Alternates Wind Farm, a parked Journey holds two rednecks who turn hostile if disturbed. It pays no reward.
Arrests
Near the O’Neil farm in Grapeseed, and on the Senora Freeway by the wind farm, a lawman is chasing a criminal. You can shoot the criminal’s leg to help the cop, or kill the cop. Helping the criminal pays $250 and 2 stars, while helping the police pays nothing.
ATM Robberies
A thief takes a wallet at an ATM. Chase him, then keep the cash ($500-$2000) or return the wallet for a full Special meter and 10% of its cash. It keeps spawning, but counts once toward 100%.
Bike Thief
Someone steals a Scorcher bicycle, and you chase the thief and return it for +3 Stamina. One version also brings an email from the owner, Gray Nicholson, saying he placed $100,000 in Animal Ark stocks in your name. It is an easy way to make money as Michael or Franklin before The Jewel Store Job. You can do it after Pulling Favors, though the email arrives later.
Border Patrols
On Mount Haan Road in Grand Senora Desert, a group of Rednecks on motorcycles ambush you. These examples cover only some of the event types, not all 57 events.
