In Grand Theft Auto IV (GTA 4) and Episodes from Liberty City, radio stations play a significant role, enhancing the immersive experience of the game. While riding in a taxi, players can ask the driver to switch the station, often accompanied by the protagonist’s opinions on the station.

Dynamic Radio Experience

Unlike previous GTA games, where radio stations consisted of a single audio file that looped, GTA 4 features dynamic radio stations. DJs and news programs inform Niko Bellic of the current weather and time of day. Weazel News updates itself as the storyline progresses, often reporting news about Niko’s actions.

When exiting a vehicle, the engine doesn’t automatically switch off, allowing the radio to continue playing while the engine idles. To fully switch off the engine, players must hold the enter/exit button. Incoming phone calls also interfere with the radio signal, much like in real life.

Expanded Radio Content in DLCs

In The Lost and Damned, the first episodic downloadable content (DLC) for GTA 4, five radio stations were expanded: WKTT Talk Radio, The Beat 102.7, Liberty City Hardcore, Liberty Rock Radio, and Radio Broker. New music tracks were added to the rotations, playing alongside the original songs. These new tracks are also included in the original GTA 4 game.

The second DLC, The Ballad of Gay Tony, similarly updated five different stations: Vladivostok FM, K109 The Studio, Electro-Choc, San Juan Sounds, and Integrity 2.0. With both DLC packs installed, players hear the combined radio content in all single-player and multiplayer modes.

Episodes from Liberty City

Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City is available in a stand-alone format, combining the radio content from The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony with additional, exclusive music on three new radio stations: RamJam FM, Self-Actualization FM, and Vice City FM. These new stations replace several that didn’t carry over from GTA 4. However, if the player downloaded the episodes, the original GTA 4 radio stations remain available, with the new stations from The Ballad of Gay Tony included only if the special disc from the episodes was purchased.

Changes and Updates

In April 2018, ten years after GTA 4’s release, some songs were removed due to expired licenses. Vladivostok FMreceived a new soundtrack, as all but one of the original songs were removed.

From June 3, 2020, in the PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV: The Complete Edition, the three exclusive stations coexist with all existing GTA 4 stations, following the release and combination of GTA 4 and EFLC as one game.
