Grand Theft Auto V (GTA 5) introduces players to Michael De Santa, a character with a richly layered past and a significant role in the game’s storyline. Let’s delve into his journey and the complexities of his character.

Backstory and Character Development

Michael De Santa, originally known as Michael Townley, is one of the three protagonists in GTA 5, alongside Franklin Clinton and Trevor Philips. Voiced by Ned Luke, Michael is a former bank robber who faked his death to escape his criminal life and start anew in Los Santos. However, his past soon catches up with him, drawing him back into the world of crime due to familial and financial pressures.

Life Before Los Santos

Born in the Midwest in the late 1960s, Michael grew up in a trailer park with an abusive, alcoholic father. After a promising high school football career was cut short by injuries, he turned to crime. By the age of twenty, he had been imprisoned twice, where he honed skills crucial for his criminal career, including heist planning with Lester Crest. His partnership with Trevor Philips began after a violent encounter, leading to years of bank robberies and heists.

Family and Personal Life

Michael is married to Amanda and has two children, Jimmy and Tracey. His attempt at a normal life is marred by a failing marriage, disrespectful children, and his own midlife crisis. Seeking therapy from Dr. Isiah Friedlander, Michael struggles with depression and infidelity, which therapy barely alleviates.

Return to Crime

Michael’s peaceful life in Los Santos is disrupted when he re-encounters Trevor, who believed him to be dead. Alongside Franklin, whom Michael mentors, they embark on various heists, including the infamous Jewel Store Job, rekindling his criminal notoriety.

Key Events and Missions

Prologue: An ill-fated heist in North Yankton where Michael orchestrates his death with FIB agent Dave Norton.

The Jewel Store Job: This heist marks Michael’s return to crime, involving Franklin and highlighting Michael’s strategic mind.

Lifeinvader Sabotage: Michael engages in corporate sabotage to appease Lester.

Union Depository Heist: The pinnacle of his criminal comeback, aiming for a massive gold theft with Trevor and Franklin.

Climactic Decisions

The game’s ending presents Franklin with significant choices:

  • Kill Trevor on orders from Steve Haines to eliminate a liability.
  • Kill Michael as retribution for Devin Weston.
  • Team Up: Franklin, Michael, and Trevor join forces to eliminate their enemies, bringing resolution to their turbulent journey.

Michael’s story is one of redemption, family, and the inevitable pull of his past, making him a central figure in GTA 5’sintricate narrative.

Grand Theft Auto V (GTA 5) offers players three possible endings that determine the fates of Franklin, Michael, and Trevor. Each ending presents unique consequences and shifts the dynamics between the characters.

Option A: Something Sensible

Franklin decides to eliminate Trevor due to his unpredictable and dangerous behavior. After informing Michael, who reluctantly agrees to assist, Franklin confronts Trevor at the Murrieta Oilfields. A car chase ensues, culminating in Michael crashing into Trevor’s truck, leading to Trevor’s fiery demise.

Aftermath: Michael and Franklin agree that the decision was necessary. However, this strains their relationship, as Michael can no longer hang out with Franklin. Additionally, Trevor’s friends, like Ron Jakowski, sever ties with Michael, who also inherits Trevor’s share of the Union Depository heist.

Option B: The Time’s Come

Franklin tricks Michael into meeting him in the desert under the guise of a discussion. After a call from Amanda about their daughter’s college acceptance, Franklin reveals his intent to kill Michael. A chase leads to the Palmer-Taylor Power Station, where Franklin confronts Michael on a chimney walkway, resulting in Michael’s fall to his death.

Aftermath: This choice isolates Franklin from Michael’s family and friends, with Trevor, Amanda, and Jimmy cutting ties. Michael’s share from the heist goes to his family, who move on by selling their house.

Option C: The Third Way

With Lester Crest’s strategic planning, Franklin, Michael, and Trevor unite to eliminate their enemies. They set a trap at a foundry, luring in Steve Haines and Devin Weston’s forces, decimating them. Michael, Trevor, and Franklin then take direct action against Haines, Cheng, and Stretch, respectively. The trio concludes by executing Devin Weston in a dramatic fashion, pushing his car off a cliff.

Aftermath: This ending allows for reconciliation between Michael and Trevor. They agree to end their criminal partnership but maintain their friendship. Michael receives thanks from Don Percival for inadvertently aiding his business interests, and Trevor, though refusing money, accepts Michael’s apology, mending their relationship.
