How to get the GOURANGA bonus
The Hare Krishna move in a line, so the trick is to hit all of them in one pass. A car is the simplest tool for a GTA 1 Kill Krishna attempt: drive along the procession and run over every member. The alternative is to line them up and gun them down with a machinegun, which also earns the bonus. Either way the police react as if you had attacked ordinary pedestrians, so expect a full wanted level.
“GOURANGA” is a word the Hare Krishna movement popularised in the 1970s, usually to describe happiness. It later returned as a cheat code in the PC version of GTA 2.
Making the Krishna follow you
If you would rather not kill them, you can lead them. Walk close to the front member of a group. The Krishna may run around you or stop and let you step in behind them. Do it correctly and they start to follow you, and the rest of the group follows the leader.
- Gunfire scares them off, and so do vehicles.
- Once they flee, they never follow you again.
- A following group can be walked into danger, for example off a great height.
The Krishna in GTA 2: Vedic Massacre!
In GTA 2 the Krishna are a gang rather than background pedestrians. Their leader Sunbeam is one of Claude Speed’s three contacts in the Industrial District, and the gang is at war with the Zaibatsu Corporation and the Russian Mafia. The mission Vedic Massacre! comes from Jerkov of the Russian Mafia and needs maximum Russian Mafia respect.
- Find Ivan and his mercenary friends in Azeri Heights.
- Drive them to the Holy Vedic Temple.
- Kill enough Krishna to anger them, then survive two minutes inside the temple.
The two-minute timer only starts once your respect with the Krishna reaches -100. The reward is $80,000 and a +1 score multiplier. If Russian Mafia members die before they reach the temple, the mission fails.
