The Stone Hatchet is a hidden melee weapon in GTA Online, and its Rampage ability is the reason to want it: after a kill you are nearly immortal for 12 seconds. It came with the After Hours update as a promotion for Red Dead Redemption 2 and was only available from August 3, 2018. You unlock it by finishing five Bounty Target missions.
Key facts
- Type: hatchet (melee)
- Update: After Hours, available from August 3, 2018
- Unlock: complete five Bounty Target missions, which begin with a text and an email from Maude Eccles
- Special ability: Stone Hatchet Rampage, triggered by a kill
- Rampage works in free mode only
How to unlock the Stone Hatchet
Maude Eccles contacts you by text and then email, and each email sets up one bounty target to track down. Finish five of them and the weapon is unlocked. The full process, including how to make targets surrender, is in the Stone Hatchet Challenge bounty guide.
Stone Hatchet stats and handling
It looks like a traditional tomahawk: a stone axe head tied to a wooden shaft, with leather and feathers on the handle. That makes it the oldest-looking weapon in the game. Its speed and reach are close to the regular Hatchet and the Battle Axe, and like other axes it can be used on a bike. Damage is much higher than any other melee weapon.
How Stone Hatchet Rampage works
- Kill a player or an NPC with the hatchet and Rampage starts, similar to Trevor Philips’ special ability.
- You are nearly immortal for 12 seconds, and every further hatchet kill lengthens it.
- Use it to cut through several enemies in melee, or to run away safely.
- Switching to another weapon ends Rampage immediately, so you cannot shoot while it is active.
- After Rampage ends you wait 60 seconds before it can trigger again. In that gap the hatchet is a normal melee weapon.
- On a bike, Rampage now kicks you off. It originally worked from a bike, which made hit-and-run charges possible, but that was patched.
Because Rampage only triggers in free mode, the Stone Hatchet is just a different-looking axe in other modes such as Survival.
