GTA 6: 8 Gameplay Features Rockstar Scrapped Before Launch
The decade-long development of Grand Theft Auto 6 has been a journey shrouded in secrecy, punctuated by explosive leaks and tantalizing trailers. Crafting a world as ambitious as Leonida is a monumental task, and not every idea makes it to the finish line. Along the way, gameplay mechanics are tested, refined, and sometimes, completely abandoned. Thanks to extensive analysis of the 2022 development footage and official trailers, we have a fascinating glimpse into the GTA 6 that might have been. Here are eight significant gameplay features that Rockstar appears to have removed before the game’s final release.
Prone to Disappointment? A Tactical Stance Removed
One of the most exciting revelations from the early leaks was the ability for characters to go prone. Footage showed protagonists dropping flat to the ground, a mechanic never before seen in the series. Fans immediately saw the potential for more tactical combat and stealth, a natural evolution from the systems in Red Dead Redemption 2. It seemed like a perfect upgrade to the game’s shooter mechanics.
However, this feature has since been quietly shelved. While crouching is confirmed to be in the final game, offering a stealthier approach, the ability to lie completely flat is gone. The most likely reason is the sheer complexity involved. Creating seamless animations and collision physics for a prone character across Leonida’s diverse environments—from murky swamps and sandy beaches to urban concrete and building interiors—for two different protagonists would be an immense undertaking. Ultimately, Rockstar may have decided the development cost outweighed the benefit for a feature more at home in a dedicated tactical shooter.
The Dream of Dual-Wielding
Another feature hinted at in the early development builds was dual-wielding. Sharp-eyed fans noticed that the initial inventory UI seemed designed with two separate slots for hands, suggesting players could equip two weapons at once. The thought of running through Vice City with a pistol in each hand, like a true action movie hero, was a thrilling prospect.
Unfortunately, more recent looks at the game’s interface show a redesigned, more streamlined weapon system that reverts to a single-weapon layout. While the initial evidence was compelling, it’s possible this was merely a UI experiment that was later discarded. Unlike the prone mechanic, which was visibly functional, dual-wielding remains a feature that seems to have been cut early in the design phase.
A More Grounded Arsenal
For years, GTA protagonists have operated with a sort of magic pocket, capable of holding an entire arsenal of rocket launchers, sniper rifles, and shotguns simultaneously. GTA 6 is set to change that. The game is scrapping the classic weapon wheel in favor of a more realistic, limited loadout system reminiscent of Red Dead Redemption 2.
Leaked footage and official trailers show characters storing their weapons in the trunk of their car. This means players will only be able to carry a limited number of firearms on their person at any given time. This is a fundamental shift for the franchise, moving away from the arcade-style power fantasy and toward a more grounded experience. Planning a heist or expecting a firefight will now require tactical decisions about which weapons to bring, adding a new layer of tension and realism to the gameplay.
Toning Down the Vice in Vice City
It wouldn’t be a GTA game without mature content, and the 2022 leaks confirmed that Vice City’s nightlife would be as vibrant as ever, with detailed strip club interiors. Rockstar has since officially confirmed that these establishments will return, even including male dancers for the first time.
However, according to detailed analysis of the development footage, the most explicit content appears to have been toned down for the final release. While the game will undoubtedly be mature and suggestive, in line with the series’ satirical tone, fully explicit nudity and sex scenes are reportedly not part of the final cut. This move is consistent with Rockstar’s history of pushing the envelope for shock value and social commentary while carefully avoiding anything that could jeopardize the game’s rating or invite unnecessary controversy.
The Sound of the City, Uninterrupted
A subtle but interesting detail from the leaks showed the male protagonist, Jason, wearing earbuds while walking on the street. This led many to believe that for the first time in the series, players would be able to listen to the in-game radio stations while on foot. It was a small feature, but one that promised to add a new layer of personal immersion to exploring the world.
Further analysis, however, suggests this feature has been removed. It seems music will once again be locked to vehicles. This is likely an intentional design choice. Rockstar appears to want players to be fully immersed in the ambient soundscape of Leonida—the waves crashing on the beach, the chatter of pedestrians, and the hum of city traffic—rather than having it drowned out by a personal soundtrack.
Minigames That Didn’t Make the Team
While this falls into unconfirmed territory, a since-deleted Reddit leak from an alleged insider claimed that GTA 6 would feature a 3v3 basketball minigame, among other side activities. This rumor gained some traction because other details from the same source were later corroborated by official reveals.
Rockstar has never acknowledged this feature, and it hasn’t appeared in any official material. We do know that activities like fishing, hunting, kayaking, and gym workouts are confirmed, bringing a slice of the RDR2 lifestyle to the modern world. Whether basketball was ever a real system that got cut, or simply a rumor, remains a mystery. Still, the idea of a fully-fledged sports minigame was an exciting prospect that seems to have been left on the cutting room floor.
The Hidden Isles of Leonida
This is less a cut feature and more about content that Rockstar is deliberately holding back. Detailed fan analysis of the official map and trailer footage suggests that we haven’t seen all of Leonida yet. While major areas like Vice City, Port Gellhorn, and the Grassrivers have been shown, community theories point to the possibility of additional, unrevealed islands, perhaps inspired by Cuba or the Bahamas.
It’s entirely possible that these locations exist in the final game and are simply being saved as a surprise for players to discover at launch. Given the scale of the leaks, Rockstar is likely keeping some of its biggest secrets under wraps. So, while not technically unrevealed rather than cut, these potential map areas are a part of the game that has been absent from all marketing so far.
A Glimpse Behind the Curtain: Unfinished Business
Finally, the trailers and screenshots themselves are evidence of a constant development process. Eagle-eyed fans have spotted numerous unfinished visual details, from background NPCs standing idle in a default pose to mismatched road textures and inconsistent lighting. On their own, these are minor blemishes expected in marketing footage for a game still in production.
Taken together, however, they prove that Rockstar is comfortable showing builds that are not yet finished. This opens the door for any number of smaller, harder-to-spot systems to have been changed, tweaked, or removed entirely between the time the trailers were captured and the game’s launch. It’s a reminder that everything we’ve seen is just a snapshot, and the final, polished product may differ in countless ways, big and small.
