Setup: Data Recovery is the one-time setup mission of The Contract in GTA Online. You infiltrate the FIB Headquarters in Downtown Los Santos to get the data that points to Dr. Dre’s stolen phone, then take a hard drive back to your Agency. The run shows that three copies of Dre’s music exist and opens the Data Leak strands.

Setup: Data Recovery briefing
Back at the Agency, Franklin and Imani explain the problem. Dr. Dre sent the number of his phone and Imani has been tracking it, but the phone is firewalled with extra protections against remote access. The only route left is to break into the FIB Headquarters in Downtown Los Santos, find the server stacks for their mass surveillance program and insert a thumb drive without being caught. That gives Imani remote access, a full data signature of the phone and a way to trace any copies. When you are ready, log in at the computer in your office downstairs and select VIP Contract.
Setup: Data Recovery step by step
- Go to the roof of the FIB Building.
- Open the skylight and get inside.
- Find the communications room and blow open the door.
- Install the software on the computer, then wait while it installs. Do not let the computer be destroyed.
- Steal the hard drive.
- Exit the FIB Building and lose the cops.
- Deliver the hard drive to the Agency.
After Setup: Data Recovery
After the FIB job, you learn that three copies of Dre’s music have been made, and each one sits in a different strand. The three strands can be played in any order. Setup: Data Recovery is only required the first time, and you can replay it from the Archive on the Agency computer once the Contract is finished.
