GTA 2 Residential District Guide: Gangs, Missions, Save

The GTA 2 Residential District is the second mission area of Grand Theft Auto 2, a district of Anywhere City full of houses, warehouses, strip clubs, a prison, house trailers, water generators and research laboratories. Claude Speed works for three gangs here: the Rednecks, the SRS Scientists and the Zaibatsu Corporation. The mission figures below come from the PlayStation version of the area, and where it differs from other versions this guide says so.

Key facts

  • Chapter: Area 2: Residential, unlocked by Area 1: Downtown
  • Score target: three million dollars, which unlocks the Industrial area
  • 100% completion: 22 gang missions, 20 Kill Frenzies and 25 Special Tokens
  • Mission rewards (PlayStation): $30,000, $50,000 or $70,000
  • Maximum wanted level: five, with Special Agents chasing you
  • Save point: the Jesus Saves church in Morton, for $50,000

What is in the district

Unlike Downtown, the garage here lets you see Gold Mines, which are vehicle mines. From wanted level 5 the Special Agents begin to chase you. The district has 15 neighborhoods: Arbo, Belmont, Cayman, Dominatrix, Guntersville, Largo, Mobile RV Park, Morton, Redemption, Stromberg, Tabasco, The Village, Wormley, Xanadu and Xenoton.

How the chapter works

Earn enough points in Downtown and you unlock the Residential District. Reaching three million dollars unlocks Industrial, and you may leave then even if gang jobs are unfinished, although that rules out 100% for the chapter. Missions come from payphones in each gang’s turf, and the compass arrows match the respect-o-meter colours. Finishing every Special Token opens Bonus Stages D, E and F in Area 3. You save at the Jesus Saves church in Morton, and a TV Van’s antenna always points to it.

The PlayStation version differs in several ways: items and weapons appear only around gang contact areas, hospitals and police stations, power-ups come only from Car Crusher bonuses, some missions are renamed and have fewer targets, and the Wang Cars side-mission is absent.
