With Grand Theft Auto VI weeks away, a lot of players are about to buy a console for one game. “GTA 6 PS5 or Xbox” is a rising search around the game, and the internet is full of confident comparison charts that Rockstar has never published. This guide sticks to what Rockstar, Sony and Take-Two have actually confirmed, flags what is only rumor, and helps you pick the right machine before November 19.
Key facts
- GTA 6 launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S only. There is no PS4, Xbox One or PC version at launch.
- Rockstar says the console versions run at 30 frames per second “for now”. A 60 FPS mode has not been promised.
- The game is listed as PS5 Pro Enhanced, but Sony and Rockstar have not said what that includes.
- The game costs the same on both platforms: $79.99 for the Standard Edition, $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition.
- Rockstar has not published a platform-by-platform performance comparison.
GTA 6 PS5 or Xbox: the short answer
If you already own a PS5 or an Xbox Series X|S, you do not need to buy anything. GTA 6 runs on all of them, and nothing confirmed so far makes one base console clearly better than the other.
If you are buying new, decide on the things you can verify today: price, controller, storage and where your friends play. Do not choose based on resolution and frame-rate figures from unofficial comparison sites. Those numbers are guesses.
What is confirmed on every console
Frame rate: 30 FPS, for now
After the Extended Look aired in late August, Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson told content creators that the game currently runs at 30 FPS on consoles. As reported by TechRadar and others, he added that he would have to check with the technical team before saying anything about a 60 FPS option.
That is not a promise that 60 FPS is coming, and it is not a denial either. Plan around 30 FPS and treat anything higher as a bonus.
Digital on both platforms
The boxed version of GTA 6 contains a download code, not a disc. That means a console without a disc drive, such as the PS5 Digital Edition or the Xbox Series S, loses nothing here. We explain the details in our guide to the GTA 6 editions and pre-order bonuses.
Same content, same price
Rockstar has not announced any platform-exclusive missions or content. Both versions get the same editions, and all pre-orders and purchases made before November 20 include the Vintage Vice City Pack.
GTA 6 on PS5 and PS5 Pro
Sony is clearly the marketing partner. Rockstar states that the Extended Look was captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5, and Sony runs an official features page for the game. It lists:
- Haptic feedback on the DualSense controller that responds to what happens on screen.
- Adaptive triggers with dynamic resistance.
- Controller speaker effects for certain events and interactions.
- Tempest 3D Audio for positional sound.
- Near-instant loading thanks to the console’s SSD.
- A PS5 Pro Enhanced label.
What the page does not list is a resolution or a frame rate, for either the base PS5 or the Pro. The Pro will presumably deliver a sharper image, but nobody outside Rockstar and Sony can tell you by how much.
Sony also revealed two limited-edition GTA VI DualSense controllers during its September 3 State of Play, in black and white, at $84.99 each, releasing on November 19. As of early October, Sony has not announced an official PS5 console bundle with the game, although some retailers, such as EE in the UK, sell their own console-plus-game packages.
GTA 6 on Xbox Series X and Series S
Both Xbox consoles are supported at launch. That includes the Series S, which matters because it is the cheapest way to play. It is also the least powerful of the supported consoles, so it is reasonable to expect a lower resolution than on Series X. Rockstar has not given numbers.
The Series X is the most powerful base console on paper. In practice, big multiplatform games are tuned to run almost identically on PS5 and Series X, and there is no confirmed advantage for either one in GTA 6.

What about the leaks?
A set of alleged Sony guidelines for the PS5 Pro Enhanced label surfaced in September and was used to argue that GTA 6 must run at native 4K, or at a higher frame rate, on the Pro. Neither Sony nor Rockstar has confirmed that document or its implications. Rob Nelson’s 30 FPS comment is the only on-the-record statement so far.
The same caution applies to any claimed file size. Rockstar has not announced one, so leave room on your drive but do not buy extra storage based on a rumor.
GTA 6 on PS5 or Xbox: how to choose
- Lowest price: Xbox Series S is the cheapest entry point, with a lower expected resolution.
- Controller features: PS5 is the only platform with confirmed haptics and adaptive trigger support.
- Best possible image: PS5 Pro is the only console with an “Enhanced” label, but you are paying a premium for details that have not been announced.
- Friends and online: Rockstar has not announced cross-play, and GTA 6’s multiplayer has no date. If you plan to play online later, buy the platform your friends are on.
- Your library: if you already own games or a subscription on one platform, staying there is usually the sensible choice.
Whichever you pick, the game you get is the same Leonida, with the same hurricanes and wildlife and the same Jason and Lucia story.
