Updated November 5, 2026: Rockstar has confirmed the GTA 6 file size, with pre-loading needing up to 212 GB of storage, and it has moved the digital pre-load forward to November 10.
The GTA 6 file size is up to 212 GB, according to Rockstar. The company gave the figure on November 3 in its post announcing that digital pre-orders can pre-load from November 10, two days earlier than the November 12 date it announced before. Here is what the number means for your console, how it compares with the earlier 210 GB report, and what is still unknown.
Key facts
- Rockstar says the pre-load requires up to 212 GB of storage, and that storage requirements may vary by device.
- Digital pre-orders can pre-load from November 10. On PS5 it starts at midnight local time. On Xbox Series X|S it starts at 12 AM GMT for everyone at the same time.
- Boxed (code-in-box) editions go on sale November 12, so those buyers can redeem the code and pre-load from then.
- Rockstar gave no separate PS5 or Xbox figures, and did not say whether a day-one patch is included.
- Launch is still November 19, 2026.
Where the 212 GB GTA 6 file size comes from
The 212 GB number is Rockstar’s own. It comes from the company’s November 3 announcement, as reported by Notebookcheck, GameRant, KitGuru and Gizmodo. Rockstar worded it carefully: the pre-load requires up to 212 GB of storage, and storage requirements may vary by device.
How the official GTA 6 file size compares with the 210 GB report
On October 27, the dataminer account PlayStation Game Size reported a 210 GB PS5 download. Insider Gaming said it corroborated that figure. Rockstar’s number is 2 GB higher.
The two numbers are close, but they are not the same thing. The report described a download size on PlayStation. Rockstar describes the storage the pre-load requires, and says it can vary by device. Use 212 GB as the planning figure, since it is the official one.
Is the GTA 6 file size the download or the install?
Rockstar has not said. Its wording is about the storage the pre-load requires, and it does not separate the download from the installed game. It also did not say whether a day-one patch is included.
In practice, plan for at least 212 GB of free space and keep a margin on top. That way the pre-load does not stop halfway.
The GTA 6 file size on each console
Here is what a game of up to 212 GB means on each supported console, using the usable storage figures reported by Dexerto, heise and Engadget. Rockstar gave no per-console numbers, so this table applies the single 212 GB figure to every console:
| Console | Usable storage (approx.) | Share taken by 212 GB |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 with 825 GB SSD | About 667 GB | Nearly a third |
| Xbox Series X | About 800 GB | About a quarter |
| Xbox Series S | About 362 to 364 GB | More than half |
The Series S is the tightest fit. Rockstar said requirements may vary by device, but it has published no Xbox-specific size. If you are still choosing a console, our PS5 or Xbox comparison covers what each one offers.
How big is GTA 6 compared with other Rockstar games?
Red Dead Redemption 2 needed 149 GB of free space on PS4 when it launched in 2018, according to IGN, as cited by Engadget. At up to 212 GB, GTA 6 would be 63 GB larger.
That fits everything Rockstar has said about the world. Rockstar North’s Aaron Garbut told Game Informer the map is about twice the size of GTA V’s. Our interactive GTA 6 map shows the six regions of Leonida.
How to make room before the pre-load
- Check your free space now, in your console’s storage settings, and aim for well over 212 GB.
- Move older games to a USB drive. On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, a USB drive can store games built for these consoles, but they must run from the internal SSD or an approved expansion.
- Consider an expansion: a compatible M.2 SSD on PS5, or a Storage Expansion Card on Xbox, if you keep many large games installed.
- Delete what you no longer play, including old captures and videos.
- Turn on automatic downloads so the pre-load starts by itself on November 10 (digital) or after you redeem your code from November 12 (boxed).
Boxed copies need the same space. The physical edition contains a download code rather than a disc, so every copy of GTA 6 is downloaded. Our pre-load and physical edition checklist walks through redeeming the code.
Plan your launch-week download
A download this large takes time, so start it as soon as the pre-load opens rather than on launch night. Use a wired connection if you can. In the UK, the broadband provider Hyperoptic said it would pause planned network maintenance on November 12, which it had described as pre-load day, as reported by ISPreview. Rockstar has since moved the digital pre-load to November 10.
The game itself unlocks at midnight local time on November 19 on PlayStation, as explained in our GTA 6 release time guide. On PS5, boxed codes also have to match your account’s region; see our region lock guide.
What is still unknown about the GTA 6 file size
- Whether 212 GB is the download size, the install size, or both.
- Separate PS5 and Xbox Series X|S sizes, and whether Series S is smaller.
- Whether a day-one patch is included, and how big it is.
- Whether the Ultimate Edition or PS5 Pro enhancements add extra data.
