The GTA 6 review embargo reportedly lifts on November 18, 2026, the day before the game launches. Rockstar has not confirmed it, but the date was first shared by a well-known insider and then independently verified by Insider Gaming. Here is what has been reported about review copies, when scores could go live, what is only rumor, and how the timing compares with GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2.
Key facts
- Insider NateTheHate said on October 26 that Rockstar had started sending review copies, with an embargo on November 18.
- Insider Gaming said it independently verified the November 18 date.
- Rockstar has not confirmed any review embargo details.
- No embargo time has been reported reliably.
- GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
When does the GTA 6 review embargo lift?
According to the current reports, on Wednesday, November 18, 2026. The date first appeared in an X post from NateTheHate on October 26, who said review code was going out to media. On October 27, Insider Gaming said it had verified the same date on its own, as reported by GameWatcher.
Two caveats matter. Rockstar has not said anything publicly about reviews, and it is not known how many outlets have received the game or whether they all share the same embargo. Until reviews actually appear, treat November 18 as a well-sourced report rather than a confirmed GTA 6 review embargo.
What time will GTA 6 reviews go live?
Nobody reliable has said. A user on the ResetEra forum suggested scores around late morning UTC on November 18, but that claim is unverified, and embargo times often differ by region and by outlet. If you want to read reviews as soon as they appear, check your usual sites on the morning of November 18 in Europe, or overnight in the Americas.
Whatever the hour, the game itself unlocks at midnight local time on November 19 on the PlayStation Store, as explained in our GTA 6 release time guide.
Have review copies of GTA 6 gone out?
That is what both NateTheHate and Insider Gaming reported. Earlier in October, Insider Gaming had already said reviews would be published before launch, without giving the date at the time. A May claim that there would be no review copies at all has since been contradicted by this reporting.
Insider Gaming had also reported that copies would go out on PS5 or Xbox before the end of October. Which platform each outlet reviews on, and whether footage from the PS5 Pro is allowed, has not been reported.
One more claim is worth flagging as a rumor. A YouTuber said review copies display the reviewer’s name on screen to discourage leaks. Two insiders disputed it a couple of days later, and Rockstar has not commented.
How the timing compares with GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2
A review embargo one day before launch would match Rockstar’s recent pattern:
| Game | Reviews published | Launch |
|---|---|---|
| GTA V | September 16, 2013 | September 17, 2013 |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | October 25, 2018 | October 26, 2018 |
| GTA 6 (reported) | November 18, 2026 | November 19, 2026 |
That leaves very little time between the first scores and launch, so most buyers who pre-ordered will already have the game pre-loaded when reviews land. If you are still deciding, our pre-order bonus guide explains why buying by the end of November 19 still gets you the bonus.
Previews are not reviews
Several previews have been published already, and they are easy to confuse with reviews. Edge’s cover story at the end of October was based on a roughly 90-minute demo played by Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson, not on a review copy. The Netflix Extended Look in August and the Game Informer cover story in September were also guided presentations.
Reviews will be the first verdicts from people who played the game freely, including how long it takes to finish. Rockstar’s only figure so far is Rob Nelson’s 80-hour playthrough, as covered in our story length explainer.
What GTA 6 reviews will tell us
Reviews should answer the questions previews could not: how the story holds up over dozens of hours, how the Criminal Profile and relationship systems play out, how stable the game is at launch and how it runs on each console. They will also give the first independent take on the 30 frames per second Rockstar has confirmed for consoles for now.
Is GTA 6 eligible for The Game Awards 2026?
Yes, based on the show’s own rules. The Game Awards FAQ requires games to be on sale by November 20 at 9 PM Pacific to be eligible, as reported by Kotaku, and GTA 6 launches on November 19.
How to avoid spoilers before launch
- Expect reviews to avoid major story spoilers, but videos and comments under them may not.
- Mute keywords such as character names on social media from November 18.
- Leaked footage from development builds has circulated online, so be careful with clips that claim to show late-game missions.
